FAQ

Questions you may have before beginning.

01

Can I experience Therapeutic Mindfulness before joining a six-week program?

Yes. We offer a free 90-minute group Introduction to Mindfulness.

It follows the same broad rhythm as our six-week classes, with mindfulness practice, contemplative teaching, psychological reflection and conversation with Leon and Kirsty.

You can choose remote or in-person attendance in Randburg and tell us which times could work for you. When a suitable group can be formed, we’ll contact you with the proposed schedule and practical information.

02

Do I need previous meditation experience?

No.

The programs are suitable for people beginning mindfulness practice as well as people who already have some experience and would like greater structure, reflection or depth.

03

Is Therapeutic Mindfulness Buddhist or religious?

No Buddhist belief or change of faith is required.

Our work is informed by Buddhist contemplative traditions, and we believe in acknowledging those roots rather than presenting mindfulness as though it appeared without a history.

The programs themselves are offered in a secular form and are open to people of all faiths and none.

04

Is the program therapy?

The weekly group combines mindfulness practice, contemplative teaching, conversation and psychological reflection. It is not itself psychotherapy.

The six-week program does, however, include four individual psychology sessions with Kirsty as a distinct professional component: one before the group begins, two during the program and one afterwards.

Leon’s contemplative role is separate from Kirsty’s psychological role.

05

How long is the program?

Six weeks.

The group meets once a week for a two-hour session.

06

How large are the groups?

Groups begin with a minimum of four participants.

Six is ideal and eight is the maximum.

This keeps the group small enough for meaningful participation and attention.

07

Are programs online or in person?

Both are available.

Each group is either fully online or fully in person. We do not combine online and in-person participants in the same session.

In-person programs are primarily held in Randburg.

08

Is my journal private?

Yes.

Your journal belongs to you.

We may invite you to reflect on things you have noticed through practice and journalling, but you are not expected to submit your journal or allow us to read it.

09

How do I know which program to choose?

You can use our program finder.

It asks a small number of reflective questions and suggests one, or sometimes two, possible places to begin.

It is a guide, not a diagnosis.

10

What happens after I sign up?

We use your program choice and availability to build a small group that can meet consistently.

Once a suitable cohort is ready, we contact you with the proposed schedule and practical information before you commit.

11

Can I claim any of the program from medical aid?

The Therapeutic Mindfulness program itself is not presented as a medical-aid benefit.

The program does, however, include four individual psychology sessions with Kirsty. These are billed separately at R1,300 each as professional psychology consultations and may be claimable from your medical aid, depending on your scheme, plan and available benefits.

We cannot guarantee reimbursement, so we recommend confirming your psychology benefits with your medical aid beforehand.
